Why Are You Not Fulfilling Your Potential?

“The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible.” - Arthur C Clarke

“Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential.” - Liane Cordes

“Questions provide the key to unlocking our unlimited potential.” - Anthony Robbins

Very few people can claim that they have achieved all that they are capable of. Do you have a nagging feeling that you could do much, much more with your life and career?

What is that is stopping you right now from making a much greater contribution to society? What is that is preventing you from fulfilling your potential?

1. You do not have enough belief in yourself.

All successful people have enormous self-belief. This does not mean that they are arrogant, narcissistic or complacent -- on the contrary, they are self critical and push themselves hard because they know that they can achieve more.

What is it that is special about you?

2. You do not measure yourself against written goals.

It is hard to make progress if you have no clear goals for your life. Set yourself targets in the areas that are important to you. You can be flexible and adjust how you move forward but you must keep moving.

Do you have written objectives that you track regularly?

3. You are too comfortable where you are.

It is easy and natural to settle into a rut. High achievers take risks. They move out of their comfort zones.

Where are you right now -- inside your comfort zone or taking risks?

4. You are lazy.

Either that or you waste a lot of time every day on low value activities.  If you have clear goals but are not making progress towards them, look at your activity level. Persistence pays dividends.

How high is your work rate?

5. You are not mixing with high achievers.

Let’s face it -- your friends and family are really nice people but they are not challenging you to achieve more. Spend more time with high flyers and positive thinkers who understand ambition and achievement. They will encourage you and give you the direct advice you need.

How much time are you spending with really successful people?

Your Core Concern in Life

By Dr Robert Anthony

"This above all: to thine own self be true. And it must follow,
as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man."
- William Shakespeare

Depending on our Personality filters, we all have a Core Concern
that is at the basis of most of our fear, doubt and worry. We all
spend a lot of time and energy trying to avoid feeling our Core
Concern. Much of this is done unconsciously.

Becoming aware of your habitual Focus of Attention and Coping
Strategy helps shine a light on that Core Concern and the simple
act of awareness begins to loosen the hold the Core Concern has on
you.

I am trying to get you to be more aware of your Core Concern.
I am NOT telling you to get rid of it. Much of the non-productive
behaviour that you engage in is due to trying to rid yourself of
that Core Concern, trying not feel it and especially trying not let
anyone see that you feel it.

What I am suggesting is that you accept it with no judgement. Just
a statement of what is and a release. This is very
powerful. Try it. "Oh, that's just my fear/anger/avarice/etc.
talking."

We spend so much energy trying NOT to feel, but the trick is to
just let the feeling in - acknowledge it, thank it for its
wisdom and let it move on. Like a thought passing through your
mind, a feeling passes through your body. It's alright, let it in,
let it out. Trying to repress or rid yourself of it only increases
its hold on you.

Any time you accept "what is", you release resistance and then you
have much more energy available to you. Is there anything about
yourself that you don't accept? What if you just dropped all
resistance to it? What if you said, "this is what I am and that's
okay"? Wouldn't that feel good? No judgement, no guilt, no shame.
Those are very low vibration emotions and they never help or effect
change. They keep you stuck. In acceptance, there is healing and
movement.

Limits? What Limits?

"Know your limits, then ignore them." - John Mason

We all have limits. However, we always seem to break our limitations. Every time we learn and apply a new skill, we break a limit we used to have.

Sometimes we convince ourselves that something can’t be done. The bigger the task, the more time consuming, the more complicate, the more we are daunted by it.

Our limits tend to be fear or comfort. First, we are afraid of failure and don’t like the idea of working long hard hours to reach a goal just to have it fail. So fear of failure stops us from doing. We have unlimited potential. We can literally do anything we set our minds on.

The sad reality is that we believe ourselves to be limited and don't release the power that is inside of us.

We allow things to put a lid on our potential.

People say all sorts of negative things to us about what we can and can't do. And we believe them. They can be so negative when we tell them what we want to accomplish. Especially those closest to us. Sometimes they label us. Authority figures in our lives have limited us by what they have said and how they have treated us.

How have others limited your potential by their labels or 'assurance' that "you could never do it"? Make a decision to reject their "authority". Who knows what is still in you? How can anyone possibly know what you can or cannot do?

Others may suffocate our potential by being negative or discouraging us. They are like invisible chains that hold us back. They are like stumbling blocks in our strive to be all we can be. Don’t spend any time with these people. Find friends who encourage you to be better and to achieve more. Unfortunately there are few friends who can regularly do that for us.  for us. That is one of the main reasons why I have started this blog. We need that encouragement and inspiration to be all we can be.

Take a score of your friends and acquaintances: Who can you spend more time with? Who should you stay away from?

Spend more time with people who will build you up and encourage you to be all that you can be.

Who would that be for you?

Spend more time reading about how you can succeed.
